Dan and Phyllis Martino of Paddock Lake celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary Saturday with a Holy Mass and blessing of marriage at St. Mary’s Catholic Church followed by dinner at Cortese’s.
Dan and the former Phyllis Sepanski met as teenagers at St. Catherine’s Hospital, where she worked as a nurses’ aide and Dan was a patient. They were married at St. Casimir Catholic Church in Kenosha on Sept. 13, 1958.
The Martinos, who lived in Kenosha for 22 years before moving to Paddock Lake 38 years ago, have three children: David Martino, the late Dana Martino Spencer and Dan (Christie) Martino; and one grandson. They say the time they spend with their grandson is pure joy.
For many years, Dan and Phyllis were the owner/operators of Martino’s Master Drycleaners, which is now run by their sons. The couple also developed Decorating Den, which they eventually sold to their employee and current owner, Lois Pade.
The couple says the key to a successful marriage is, in more ways than one, being together. “The word ‘Together’ was inscribed on our wedding rings. We’ve lived our lives together — physically, lovingly with our children and extensive family, in business, with longtime friends, through our faith and volunteer activities in the community. We’ve oftentimes told our children that in marriage, not every day is wonderful, but with the right attitude and good communication, the next day can be wonderful again.”
