Mangia

Four-star chef Tony Mantuano is known not only in Chicago, but also internationally as an influential culinary force. The James Beard Foundation named him “Best Chef: Midwest” in 2005 and under his guidance, Spiaggia received the James Beard Foundation nomination for “Outstanding Restaurant in America” in 2006 and 2007.

As Executive Chef, Mantuano opened Spiaggia to critical acclaim in 1984. Since then, he has owned and operated a number of other successful restaurants including Mangia Trattoria in his hometown of Kenosha, Wisconsin.

Sushi school

Don’t fret, says Ying Stoller, there is nothing so exotic about Asian cooking that it can’t be learned.

“A lot of people come to my classes and say, ‘You make it look so simple,’” said Stoller, of Gurnee, who teaches Chinese and Japanese techniques and soon will return to the Kenosha Public Museum on June 6 to teach Just Say Sushi II. “Asian people eat these meals every day. They’re not a different species. It can’t be that hard.” More
