Catherine Chalmers: American Cockroach Sept. 3 | Racine Art Museum
| Internationally known photographer Catherine Chalmers communicates a respect for nature by focusing on one of its lowliest creatures—the cockroach. This mid-career survey of large-scale color images includes three bodies of the artist’s photographs and a number of her recent videos. In her large works, Chalmers documents roaches living in an insect-sized dollhouse and roaches that have been painted to camouflage their bodies amongst flower petals. In another series, insects that have died a natural death are staged in mock executions, hanging in gallows and sitting in small electric chairs. The artist creates these images to humanize these insects and call out attention to the preciousness of all life.
Although this exhibition features Chalmers’ work on the cockroach as subject matter, her subjects also include the life cycles of other small insects and animals. Her work is included in major museum collections around the world.

Jennifer Angus: Patterns of Insect Life Sept. 3 | Racine Art Museum
| This exhibition features a walk-in environment in which the artist creates dioramas and wallpaper-like installations that are made up of actual insects. Jennifer Angus pins their small bodies to walls creating decorative patterns that recall wallpapers and other decorative treatments for interior spaces. Her use of insects as a decorative element in her environments calls our attention to their inherent beauty and her dioramas create small fantasy worlds for these creatures.

From biplane walkers to the thick-headed stuntmen of Jackass, the daredevils of history have traded great risk for fame and fortune. In the 1970s, one such daredevil rose to stardom and inspired people young and old around the world: Evel Knievel.
To mark the 35th anniversary of his Wembley Stadium jump, the Harley-Davidson Museum temporary exhibit True Evel: The Amazing Story of Evel Knievel will tell the story of the man behind the performer through fascinating artifacts drawn from both the Harley-Davidson Museum Archives and the Knievel family collection.
From Knievel’s early start as a side-show character in Butte, Montana, to his transformation into a larger-than-life master showman, marketer, and folk hero with international appeal, the 10,000-square-foot exhibit will engage visitors with the story of the man behind the seemingly fearless performer.
