Crews set to tear up I-94 again
Another road construction season is upon us on Interstate 94.
Bridge work and overnight closures have become the norm again in the Milwaukee area in recent weeks.
By the end of this week, the barricades are to make their way into Kenosha County, where freeway lane reductions are to start March 14.
It’s Year 2 of the seven-year, 35-mile reconstruction of I-94 from the Illinois state line to Milwaukee’s south side.
This year’s highlight in Kenosha County is the continuation of the reconstruction of the freeway lanes from Highway 50 to the state line.
Lane reductions are tentatively scheduled to begin at 9:30 p.m. March 14, with the beginning of preparations to shift all traffic to the southbound lanes of the freeway, as to allow for reconstruction of the northbound side.
Two lanes of traffic will flow in each direction until December.
Call it the mirror image of a configuration that caused frequent bottlenecks on the same stretch of road last year.
Along with that work, the northbound on- and off-ramps at Highway 165 are scheduled to close for part of the year, while closures of all of the ramps at Highway C are on tap for summer through late fall.
Around late April, work is to begin on the West Frontage Road between highways E and 158 and on the East Frontage Road between highways 50 and K.
As part of the West Frontage Road project, through-traffic on Highway 142 will be closed at the interstate for portions of the year.
The East Frontage Road work may coincide with the city-led building of a new West Frontage Road south of Highway K, though Public Works Director Ron Bursek said the existing West Frontage Road will remain open during the project. Bursek said land acquisitions must be completed before that work can begin.
Farther south, the village of Pleasant Prairie is scheduled to rebuild the West Frontage Road between highways C and Q this year.
Those who venture north from Kenosha will soon find more lane and ramp closures at Highway G in Racine County. Closures around Mitchell International Airport in Milwaukee will also continue on and off throughout the year, said Laura Goranson, spokeswoman for the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.
Goranson urges travelers to check closures before they plan their trips.
“It’s always good to check our Web site (plan94.org) if they can ahead of time, just to plan and see what route to take,” Goranson said.
