Metra proposes one-way, weekend rate increases
One-way and weekend fares on the Metra line are set to increase next year.
The proposed 2010 Metra budget would raise one-way fares to and from downtown Chicago on the rail line by about 6 percent starting in February. That rate increase would mean a one-way fare between Kenosha and Chicago would increase from $7.05 to $7.50. One-way rates were last raised in February of 2008.
The budget also calls for increasing the cost of weekend fares from $5 to $7. That fare has not increased since the weekend fare program was started in 1991. The penalty for making ticket purchases aboard the train would also move from $2 to $5.
Meg Reile, a spokeswoman for Metra, said a lagging sales tax was the main factor for needing these increases, which allow the system to maintain its current level of service.
The Metra Board of Directors will vote on forwarding this budget to the Regional Transportation Authority on Friday.
