UPDATE 1:47 p.m. Train derailment at Bain Station Road
A Union Pacific freight train derailed in Pleasant Prairie Monday afternoon, 24 cars of the 113-car train coming off the track between Bain Station Road and Highway 50 west of Green Bay Road.
The cause of the derailment is still under investigation, said Mark Davis, a spokesman for Union Pacific. No one was injured in the accident.
Train cars were piled up along the track, some cars broken away from their wheels. A portion of the track rail was broken and twisted.
Davis said 20 of the 24 cars were empty, the other four loaded with plywood, wheat and fertilizer.
Pleasant Prairie Police and fire department investigators on the scene said two cars had slight leaks, one of chlorine, a second of potassium hydroxide. Fire Chief Paul Guilbert, Jr. said the chlorine car was empty, and the leak was of a small amount of residual material left inside. That report conflicted with that of the railroad. Davis said a Union Pacific hazardous materials worker on the site said there were no leaks.
“The main thing is there is no hazard to the public at this time, that is the main thing we want people to understand,” said Brian Wagner, Pleasant Prairie police chief.
There were reports of large amounts of dust rising from the area. Bain Station Road is blocked. Alternative routes would include going south to 104th Street or north to 75th Street.
