Control of the LeMay auto dealership in Kenosha is still in question.

The LeMay Buick, GMC, Cadillac dealership, 7110 74th Place, has been operated for months by James P. and Chuck Van Horn, who have been operating the dealership under a management agreement while negotiating its purchase.

However, General Motors has not agreed to grant the franchise to Van Horn.

“We’re in the process of making some changes in the Kenosha market in terms of the dealership network,” said Ryndee Carney, spokeswoman for General Motors. “Nothing is finalized yet.”

General Motors announced earlier this year that it would end franchise agreements with 1,100 dealers, closing one in five dealers around the nation. With that consolidation, Carney said, GM is taking a closer look at who gets remaining franchises.

“It is very important for us to have the best possible dealers in place,” Carney said. “It is absolutely critical.”

The LeMay family operated car dealerships in Kenosha for 50 years. They opened the 74th Place business in 2000, moving from a smaller facility at 60th Avenue and Washington Road. The dealership covers six acres with a 38,000-square-foot showroom and room for 500 cars on the lot.

For the LeMays, the move to the larger, more expensive facility proved to be poor timing, with the industry hit only a few years later by declining sales.

James Van Horn said in an October interview that the dealership hired a “turnaround agent” to seek a buyer. Van Horn was chosen as the contract purchaser, and has been operating the business since September as the registered agent. He said then that he expected General Motors to approve the deal within 45 days.

The LeMays still hold the franchise.

The Van Horns own Dodge, Hyundai and Chevrolet dealerships in Fond du Lac, Sheboygan and Plymouth, Wis.

Van Horn could not be reached for comment.
