Same round, different year
The Central boys volleyball team will try to extend the best season in program history against a familiar foe and nemesis tonight.
The Falcons take on Burlington in a Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association sectional final at 7 p.m. in Paddock Lake.
Burlington has ended Central’s season in this round in each of the last two years. In 2007, the match went four games while last year it went the maximum five with Burlington winning the clincher 15-13.
Coach Jim Schultz’s Falcons have had four run-ins with Burlington this year and have come out on top each time.
The dominance of the Demons is part of a 26-6-2 campaign — the best in the program’s four-year history — and has helped the Falcons earn a No. 10 ranking in the latest State Coaches Poll.
Second-seeded Central advanced to tonight’s match by sweeping seventh-seeded Beloit Memorial 25-19, 25-8, 25-10 in a regional final Friday.
Burlington, the third seed, didn’t have quite the cakewalk that Central had in the opening round. The Demons needed four games to dispatch sixth-seeded Mukwonago.
Tonight’s winner will face the Middleton-Madison Memorial survivor in a sectional final Thursday for a trip to the State Tournament. Middleton is the bracket’s top seed and had a first round bye.
Madison Memorial defeated Madison West in five games to advance.
Bradford on road
Third-seeded Bradford will play at No. 2 seed Franklin in a sectional semifinal at 7 tonight.
The Red Devils (18-7-4) advanced by sweeping South Milwaukee 25-9, 25-7, 25-12 in a regional championship match.
Tonight’s winner will take on the winner of the New Berlin-Muskego match in a sectional final at 7 p.m. Thursday at Muskego for a trip to State.
