Kenosha Unified’s Brompton School is among elementary schools in Wisconsin nominated Thursday for a national Blue Ribbon Schools award, according the state’s Department of Public Instruction.

Tony Evers, state superintendent of schools, said Brompton is one of eight vying for the U.S. Department of Education award that focuses on results and scientifically based instruction. Seven other elementaries and their respective districts include: Allenton (Slinger), Cornell (Cornell), Lincoln (Beaver Dam), Oakfield (Oakfield), Section (Mukwonago Area), Westlawn (Cedarburg) and Wilson (Neenah Joint).

Nominations were based on criteria in two categories, including dramatic improvement and high performing schools. Dramatically improving schools are those which have made adequate yearly progress and at least 40 percent of the student population are eligible for free or reduced-price meals, receive Title I services, or have limited-English proficiency skills. Student achievement on state tests must have improved the last three years to be above the 60th percentile in reading and math.

High performing schools eligible for the award met the state’s adequate yearly progress for last two years and were among the top 10 percent of all schools for grade configuration on state tests for both reading and math.

The U.S. Department of Education will announce award winners in September.
