Birch’s 67 leads Central golf to third

Leah Birch shot a 67 as the Central girls golf team finished third at the Falcon Invitational at Hawk’s View Golf Course in Lake Geneva on Wednesday.

The Falcons shot a 316.

Waterford won the eight-team meet with a meet-record 307. Union Grove sophomore Mari Suokko was medalist with a 65 on the par 54 course.

“I was surprised with the (low) scores because of the wind,” Central coach Dan Peterson said. “The top 10 scores were 80 or less and that’s very unusual. The caused some havoc but they learned to deal with it.”

Wilmot, with Marnie Destree and Mackenzie Ostrander both shooting 81, was fifth with a 335.

Birch shot 33 on the front nine in finishing six shots ahead of Waterford’s Breanna Bertschlinger and Brittany Raab, who tied for third.

“(Leah) has the ability to hit the greens in regulation and she did that a lot today,” Peterson said. “She was pretty comfortable out there. ”

Bradford lost four matches at the Brookfield East Invitational on Wednesday. ... The Red Devils lost to Homestead, Waukesha West, Kettle Moraine and Wausau East. ... Brianna Smith and Tianna Meeks captured a victory at No. 3 doubles.
