Bristol electors OK 4.3% increase in levy
BRISTOL — Electors approved a 4.3 percent increase in the levy at the annual meeting of the Bristol School District Monday night.
The levy, certified by a handful residents attending the meeting include the full School Board, reflects an increase from $3,714,272 for the 2008-09 school year to $3,874,232 for 2009-10.
The figures also reflect a 2.85 percent decrease in revenue from state aid, according Gale Ryczek, district administrator. State aid will decrease by $55,719 next year.
“A lot of school districts were losing (state aid percentages) in the double digits,” Ryczek said. He said Bristol, by comparison, has benefited from more students attending the school.
“We’ve had increased enrollment over the last two to three years, and it’s starting to catch up and show (in the numbers), he said.
For 2010, residents can expect to pay $6.32 per $1,000 of assessed value on their home to support the school, compared with $5.56 per $1,000 this year. Thus the owner of a home assessed at $200,000 in the district would pay $1,264 for next year, compared with $1,112.
The amount does not account for a homeowner’s total property taxes; there are other taxing bodies as well.
Currently, the district is proposing to spend $8,178,682 in 2010, a 2.13 decrease. The proposed 2010 budget will be approved at a later date, he said. The levy as approved at this year’s annual meeting is considered to be a preliminary estimate with final estimates due in the fall.
In other business, residents voted to keep board member salaries the same. As was the case this year, board members and officers, including the board president, will each earn $2,000. Members of its negotiating team, of which there are two, will earn $1,500 apiece.
