Three Kenosha County fire departments responded to a huge fire at a sports bar Friday in Delavan in Walworth County.

The building that housed Mulligan’s Sports Pub and Grill was a total loss after the fire. Eight firefighters were injured battling the blaze.

Paris, Silver Lake and Wheatland fire departments were among the departments that responded with mutual aid. The Kenosha County departments responded with tanker trucks.

According to Paris Fire Chief Roland Iwen, 22 tankers were called to the fire, three truck companies, and fire chiefs from 13 departments. He said the Paris department was called off when they were on their way to the fire, because departments on the scene decided the fire was under control and no further assistance was needed.

The Associated Press reported that eight firefighters from the Lake Geneva fire department were injured when a bucket truck they were on came in contact with power lines while visibility was obscured by the thick smoke.

While the firefighters’ injuries were described as non-life threatening, one firefighter suffered serious burns and was expected to be sent to a burn unit.

The blaze apparently started as a grease fire in the kitchen. Bartender Joe Vitacca told the Janesville Gazette he saw flames coming from the fryer. He says a couple of customers were in the dining room at the time. They and several people in an upstairs apartment were able to get out safely.
