A dog found in a trash bin has found a home.

An employee at the Kenosha Public Safety Building took in Nala the SuperValu Dog last week after the dog was found behind the grocery store at 3401 80th St., apparently abandoned.

“She’s safe. She’s home,” said the woman, who did not want to be identified.

Truck drivers found the sharpei-mix about 3 a.m. Feb. 22. She was wearing a nylon collar but no tags, lying in a small cardboard box and was wrapped in blankets.

The temperature was 32 degrees, and the dog had no food or water. She was shaking from cold, emaciated and appeared pregnant.

Nala was not pregnant after all, just bloated, apparently from not eating, her new owner said. An examination also showed Nala was 1 or 2 years old, had worms and kennel cough, a respiratory infection, but was expected to recover.

The new owner considered changing Nala’s name, but found that her new pet responded to the moniker — minus the SuperValu part — that, and people seem to think it suits her.

“Everywhere we go people ask, ‘Is that Nala?’” the woman said.

Despite the unfortunate incident in the trash bin, the woman said Nala has been docile, good-natured and friendly, albeit quiet; it took several days for Nala to feel comfortable enough to bark, and even then her yelp was small.

That was fine with the owner, who said Nala has been getting more comfortable in her new home every day. The woman also was happy to have a new companion after her previous dog died.

The adoption should be formalized this week.
