There was more good news this week for motorists who frequent Highway 31 in Kenosha.

As of Wednesday afternoon, the state Department of Transportation had all but wrapped up projects that choked traffic at 75th Street, 52nd Street and 45th Street for the last four months.

DOT spokesman Dennis Shook said he was happy to report that three lanes of traffic were flowing smoothly in both directions Wednesday.

Crews began work on the $1.9 million project in late July, reconfiguring the intersections to add a third through-traffic lane on each side of Green Bay Road, pushing right-turn lanes out to the right and installing redesigned traffic islands.

Shook said the new intersections are akin to the redesign that occurred last year at Green Bay Road and 60th Street.

“They’re just replicating that whole intersection pattern at 45th, (Highway) 158 and 75th Street,” Shook said.

The only delay, he said, is the installation of traffic signals at 45th Street.

Shook said that should come by the end of next week. He cited a delay from the signal manufacturer as the reason for the setback.

The newly designed intersections are intended to relieve congestion and reduce crashes.

Shook drove the road Wednesday, saying it appeared the improvements were already working.

“‘Good deal’ is all I’ve got to say,” he said.
