incumbent Kenosha Unified School Board, 2008 to present

1) What makes you a strong candidate for the Kenosha Unified School Board?

I have been a consistent advocate for quality public schools and educational opportunities for our students during my six years on the School Board and make myself accessible to meet, communicate and collaborate with parents, school employees and other community stake holders. As a KUSD elementary music teacher for 40 years, I was proud of our district’s reputation for excellence and continue to support focusing resources on classrooms and children.

2) What qualities would you most like to see in the next Unified superintendent?

We need a superintendent with a proven track record of building positive working relationships with staff, community and school board members to plan and implement initiatives. This individual needs to empower staff to communicate concerns and work collaboratively within the district and community to re-establish trust, keeping parents engaged with the priority of meeting the learning needs of all students from those identified as at risk, meeting expectations to gifted. This person needs to commit to becoming a part of the community and appreciate the cultural influences that exist in Kenosha and be able to put aside preconceived positions.

3) If you could make one change in the school district, what would it be and why?

Use the recent curriculum audit and Common Core standards as the basis for a five- to eight-year plan focusing on manageable implementation of goals. Staff have been overwhelmed with too many simultaneous initiatives and have not been empowered to evaluate effectiveness and recommend adjustments.
