Don’t confuse KRM commuter rail with Wisconsin’s high-speed rail initiative that received federal funding earlier this year.
That’s the message from Southeastern Regional Transit Authority Chairman Karl Ostby, who said even some politicians have mixed up the two, unrelated projects.
“I think they just get confused in general,” Ostby said, noting that he has heard candidates for governor immediately begin talking about the high-speed project when asked about KRM.
The high-speed line is the result of an $823 million stimulus award that was announced in January.
According to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, initial service on the line would provide speeds of up to 79 mph, increasing to 110 mph once track and signal upgrades are completed.
Stations would be located in downtown Milwaukee, Brookfield, Oconomowoc, Watertown and Madison, with the service functioning as an extension of Amtrak’s existing Hiawatha service between Milwaukee and Chicago.
Because the nearest Amtrak station to Kenosha is in Sturtevant, Ostby said it is unlikely the service would have much of an impact on the area, though it could if and when a planned extension to Minneapolis is added.
“I don’t think we benefit as much, but I think it helps the region,” Ostby said. “I also think your connection from Milwaukee to Madison is not real compelling, in terms of ridership. I think it makes a lot more sense once it goes to the Twin Cities.”
“I don’t think it’s appealing to Kenosha,” Ostby added, “but I’m more worried about whether it’s appealing to Milwaukee and Madison.”
Track construction could start by the end of this year, with service beginning in 2013, according to the DOT.

He got it right! An 8 lane interstate, a not very fast bullit train, a poorly concieved KRM urban development killer and nonsense multi county bus hook ups, all without riders and all require operational tax subsidies, is idiotic overkill. You know Antaramian has his finger in the pie!
If anyone out there still needs this to be explained at this late date, they'll never get it. So let's quit explaining and let's get moving on this project.
(Because the nearest Amtrak station to Kenosha is in Sturtevant, Ostby said it is unlikely the service would have much of an impact on the area.) Yeah, and you can say the same for All municipalities not listed! Even for the ones listed this is a Huge Waste of OUR Taxes! It will be an endless black hole on our debt! Again, it serves only a few, but like Most other "Green" project's, it is a feel good agenda, that in reality gives little in return, if any, to ALL Wisconsin Tax Payers! The High Speed Rail system is a Joke! And Doyle should of had his Butt handed to him when he wasted Our money on these Stupid trains from SPAIN!
The KRM or the "High-Speed" rail system agenda's are very similar to the Home owner fiasco that got us into this financial break down of our economy...You have someone or an entity that has / is going to buy into something they cannot afford, both up front and over the long haul! It is as if you had someone earning $30,000 a year, buy into a $350.000 dollar home, have credit cards in the red, and yet they go and buy an $80,000 motor home... 1.) They could not afford, and 2.), They won't hardly use it! The Rail systems are a scam agenda, that will cost the vast majority who won't ever used it, for as long as it exists! When those pushing this agenda see it's going to be killed, they'll do exactly what they did when the warnings about the banking crisis were given, they'll cry Racism!
