SOMERS — A yearlong celebration to mark the 50th anniversary of the University of Wisconsin-Parkside kicked off Thursday with cake.

At noon, Chancellor Debbie Ford was joined by local officials and students in cutting the anniversary cake.

Events on campus and in the community will continue through May. Throughout the celebration, concerts, lectures and alumni events will take place at least once a week.

A “50 Years Gala” will be Oct. 12. The event will celebrate the university’s first 50 years and raise support for the Future Focus Fund, a new scholarship initiative that will give more students a chance to reach their education goals.
