Sentencing is set for February 2010 for a Kenosha woman convicted of having sexual contact with a Minnesota student.

Jurors deliberated about 3½ hours Friday before concluding that Melissa D. Koehn, 31, was guilty of three counts of fourth-degree sexual assault. She faces up to 30 years in prison when she is sentenced Feb. 5.

Koehn was charged in December 2008 in Dakota County, Minn., where she taught at St. Croix Lutheran High School, a private high school in West St. Paul.

During Koehn’s trial, which began Nov. 17, the teenage student basketball player testified she did not remember having sexual contact with Koehn. Jurors apparently disagreed.

Under Minnesota law, the teenager would have been old enough to consent to sexual contact. However, the law says sexual contact between a 16- or- 17-year-old and teacher or coach is not legal, regardless of possible consent.

Charges were filed after police found Koehn and a 17-year-old female student, who was wearing her school jacket, kissing in a car during a storm.

The officer later looked up the St. Croix Lutheran staff directory, where Koehn was listed as a teacher and coach who was on a leave of absence. The girl was listed as a student.

Koehn and the girl said Koehn began mentoring the girl during the 2007-08 school year, when Koehn was the girl’s history teacher and coach.

Their connection continued after school let out.

Koehn admitted she “still exercised some authority over” the girl, who referred to Koehn as “Ms. Koehn” when talking to police.

Both said their physical involvement began in August 2008. Koehn said there were a “handful” of incidents.

Koehn is a 1996 graduate of Shoreland Lutheran High School in Somers.
