Part of Alex Mena’s talent as a Mr. Kenosha competitor might include rounding up the courage to sing in front of an audience, something he’s never done.

“I don’t know where it will come from,” said the 19-year-old Kenosha resident minutes before parading along 56th Street and through the city’s downtown to promote the Aug. 22 competition. “I guess I’m very outgoing.”

Mena, dressed in casual Western gear, and Scott Tamer, in a Spider-Man suit, pushed a toilet in the procession downtown joined by several other contestants/paraders, including someone in a straitjacket, five horses, a car, a four-piece band, three motorcyclists, a bicyclist and various others led by organizer Larry Zamba on a Segway.

The parade’s original date, Aug. 8, was canceled because of rain.

The Mr. Kenosha pageant is a whimsical take-off of beauty and fitness competitions and includes a talent portion.

The last Mr. Kenosha was crowned 25 years ago. Zamba organized that event also.

This year’s competition will be at Madrigrano’s Marina Shore, 302 58th St. Tickets are $15 in advance or $20 at the door. For more information, visit www.misterkenosha.com or call Zamba at (262) 843-2888.

Tamer said he chose to dress as the Marvel comic superhero because the parade instruction was to do something outrageous.

“Besides, it was left over as a Halloween costume, and I decided to get more use out of it,” he said.

The Kenosha man, a pharmacist at the Veterans Affairs Hospital in North Chicago, Ill., said someone convinced him to sign up for the pageant while at a bar. He plans to sing at the contest. He’s done plenty of karaoke, he said.

“I figured I might as well do it,” he said. “It passes the time.”

Mena plans to play guitar to accompany himself when he sings at the pageant. The University of Wisconsin-Parkside sophomore said he picked up the stringed instrument as a hobby a year ago.

“I just want to show off my talents and have fun at the same time,” he said.
