This letter I dedicate to my loving mother who helped me get to the Boy Scout National Jamboree:
Dear mom,
Today was another early morning. I had to cook breakfast and we had to get up at 6 a.m. I helped cook pancakes and eggs with sausage, and the leaders all really enjoy our cooking. I think I learned it from you. Then I and a couple of boys decided we wanted to quit the patch trading for a while and go to some of the action areas. We decided to go scuba diving. After an hour and a half wait we got to go scuba diving. We got all the gear and the instructions and began our adventure. We were only able to use a four foot pool because the Jamboree staff was concerned about us getting the bends. The scuba diving was loads of fun; we were in the pool for about 15 minutes all consumed under water with the air tanks. It was well worth the wait. I can’t wait to go and try scuba diving at home!
After the scuba diving we decided to get lunch, with our swimming suits on in 95--degree heat. We walked to the kiosk to get lunch and to head back to camp. The sun was shining and the humidity was outrageous. After our food our S.P.L. (Senior Patrol Leader) decided that he, another scout, and I should do yoga. What a workout. We endured 45 minutes of yoga and, BAM, lighting struck. The crack was so loud it was like a train crash right in our campsite. Then out of the blue it started pouring, drenching everything. Luckily we had our swimsuits on so we decided to do some yoga in the rain. That was a blast. After the rain died down we were about to go to the next action center and the PA announcer reported that we were not able to leave due to another storm coming. We then had to set up sides on our rain flies to retain the dryness.
Dinner came and we cooked SPAM. I had never had SPAM but we added Italian dressing to zesty it up. After dinner we made music videos of some of the troop’s songs on the ukulele. Then it started to rain again, so we decided just to catch up on some shut eye.
Love you and miss you,
Your son,
Brian
Another fun day at our Nation Jamboree, we met some new people and were able to invite them to dinner tomorrow. We also have the 5k run which the troop is looking forward to. This experience will be one of the best I, personally, will ever have.
Brian Jacobs is one of 40 Scouts from Kenosha and Racine counties attending the national jamboree this week in northern Virginia. He is the troop’s correspondent to the daily activities at the jamboree.
