Somers property owners flood Board of Review with challenges
SOMERS — Nearly 100 property owners plan to challenge their assessments before the Board of Review.
The high number means there will be four board sessions beginning today.
The deadline to file objection forms to receive a hearing was 5:30 p.m. Monday, according to Tim Kitzman, town clerk. No further hearing appointments are being scheduled.
As of the deadline, the town received 95 appeal forms. The town had originally scheduled two days of hearings with a possibility to add a third day on Friday. The board will meet an additional day next week.
Board sessions are slated to begin at 5:30 p.m. today, 8:30 a.m. Thursday, 8:30 a.m. Friday and 6:15 p.m. Oct. 6.
During a Board of Review session, property owners and the town assessors each present evidence to support why assessments should be either changed or remain as appraised.
Associated Appraisal Consultants Inc. conducted appraisals earlier this year that included internal inspections of most of the town’s more than 3,800 properties.
The town’s last revaluation was conducted more than four years ago, but according to officials, a full revaluation with internal property inspections has not been done in at least two decades.
Since assessments were mailed to property owners a month ago, many have questioned, and some continue to object to, the methods used by appraisers. Those who have filed appeals have complained that appraisers have over-inflated their property values.
Assessors have said they did not expect the high turnout, especially at the informal open book sessions held earlier this month, which more than 500 people attended.
