Suspected salmonella poisoning closes restaurant

At least 10 people have salmonella poisoning, and officials with the Kenosha County Health Department have shut down a local restaurant.

An official with the Kenosha County Health Department confirmed that it closed Baker Street Restaurant & Pub, 6208 Green Bay Road, but that official would not comment about why the restaurant was closed down.

However, Tom Stemple, an employee of Tricoli Restaurants, which owns Baker Street, said 10 to 18 people who ate at the restaurant were sick with the bacaterial infection and owner Lou Tricoli was contacting all of his Baker Street employees to get them tested for salmonella poisoning.

“He’s gathering everyone together, trying to interview them to help find out the source of this,” Stemple said. “He’s trying to sort things out so that he can help protect everyone —his employees and the public.”

Stemple said the source of the salmonella is not yet known.

Tricoli, who owns Bombay Louie’s and the Birchwood Grill, has been in the restaurant business for more than 30 years. No cases have been linked to those two restaurants, which remained open, Stemple said.

“I know Lou is just beside himself with this,” Stemple said.

A sign on the Baker Street door said the business was closed due to a power outage. But Stemple was unaware of the sign or if there was a power outage. However, a heating and cooling truck was at the restaurant.

“That may be a precautionary thing; I don’t know,” Stemple said. “They might just be checking the coolers.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control, salmonella is a bacteria that is spread when people eat food contaminated with animal feces. The food usually looks and smells normal.

Contamination can come from beef, poultry, milk, eggs or even vegetables. Humans can also spread the salmonella bacteria when food is handled by someone who did not wash his hands with soap after using the bathroom.

Symptoms of the illness include diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps, which usually appear within 12 to 72 hours after infection.

Wash Hands

Ok, that's just nasty. Glad I don't go there. (Everyone should wash their hands.... often. Just because your momma isn't there to tell you to do it doesn't mean you can skip it.)

This disease can be brought into a restaurant OR home on/in raw vegetables and fruits, and that is why packages always say to "wash thoroughly before eating". Don't be so quick to blame a restaurateur that has many years of serving great food throughout the years. Sometimes a heavy washing just isn't enough, and then it spreads.Condolences to the victims AND the restaurant.
