Three dogs died Monday after fire started in a kitchen in a Pleasant Prairie home.

A neighbor called 911 about 2:50 p.m. Monday after seeing smoke at 12049 43rd Ave., Pleasant Prairie Police Chief Paul Guilbert Jr. said.

Homeowners Kyle and Kristy Vavra were not at home when the fire started, and no firefighters were hurt putting out the blaze.

When fire crews arrived, gray smoke billowed from the roof, and all the windows were blackened. As firefighters crawled through the home, they found an unconscious dog.

After the fire was out, firefighters used electric fans to clear out smoke and found two other unconscious dogs. All three animals died.

The fire was confined to the kitchen area. Damage estimates and a cause were not available Monday night.

— The fire was the third of three emergencies in less than an hour that kept Pleasant Prairie responders jumping.

Around 2:20 p.m., firefighters were called for an electrical problem at the Old Navy store at Prime Outlets Shopping Center, 11601 108th St. There was a problem with light fixture, but no damage.

Fire and rescue personnel were diverted from the Prime Outlets call to deal with a car crash just before 2:30 p.m.

Rescuers were called after a car stopped for a fire ladder truck and was rear-ended near Highway 165 and the East Frontage Road, Guilbert said. No one was hurt, but both cars were damaged.

The call for the house fire came in as firefighters returned from the Prime Outlets call.

Personnel from Bristol and Zion, Ill., covered Pleasant Prairie fire stations while Pleasant Prairie rescuers handled the three calls.
