Two teens accused of stealing, then crashing vehicle; passenger injured
Two Kenosha teenagers were taken into custody Monday for the theft of a vehicle that eventually crashed, severely injuring a passenger.
The injured person, 16, Kenosha, was taken to Kenosha Medical Center, where doctors said she had a ruptured spleen, potentially life-threatening. Surgery was to be scheduled, Kenosha Police reports said. Some of the other five teens in the vehicle also were treated at the hospital.
Reports and witness statements gave this account:
Those taken into custody, both 16 and from Kenosha, were transported to the Racine County Juvenile Detention Center to await a court appearance to face a delinquency petition for vehicle theft.
The driver at the time of the crash, a Bradford High School student, also faces allegations of hit and run/causing injury and was ticketed for driving with a suspended license/causing injury and reckless driving. She had been involved in a previous Juvenile Court case, but no details of that case were available.
The second teen, already on juvenile probation for a previous car theft, allegedly stole the Jeep Wrangler from Brookside Care Center, 3506 Washington Road, about 10:10 a.m. She picked up the other teens and they went joy riding. She had neck pain, back cuts and bruises from the accident.
At some point, the teens switched drivers. About 1 p.m., the second teen saw a co-worker of her social worker from the previous court case. They were both driving north on Sheridan Road at the time.
The co-worker recognized the second teen, and she sped up and made a sharp right turn onto 69th Street, causing the stolen Jeep to rollover three times and slide on its roof.
The injured teen said no one was wearing seat belts.
A 15-year-old, of Kenosha, is to be summoned to Juvenile Court for car theft for her involvement.
The teens are not being identified because state law prohibits naming or identifying juveniles involved in most delinquency cases.
