Ferne Eileen Burmood, 92, of Pleasant Prairie, passed away to be with her husband, Monday, Oct. 17, 2011, at Grande Prairie Health & Rehab.
She was born on Aug. 20, 1919, to the late Marvin and Winnie (Lohr) Price Sr. in Columbus, Nebr. She graduated from Kramer High School in 1937 in Columbus.
Ferne met the love of her life, Lee C. Burmood while working at Jub & Bess Hodges at West End Grocery. She married Lee C. Burmood on Aug. 5, 1939, in Central City, Nebr. The couple lived in Columbus where she worked next to her husband for Lyman-Richie Sand & Gravel and then at the Platte County Assessors Office for 20 years. Following her retirement, Ferne worked at the Columbus Senior center.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Columbus. Ferne enjoyed quilting, sewing, canning, dancing and playing cards. She also enjoyed baking and cooking for everyone. Ferne volunteered at the voting polls. She belonged to a Canasta Club from the time she was 18 until she was 80 years old, playing with the same ladies.
On Nov. 1, 2002 Ferne made her home at Grande Prairie Health & Rehab for almost nine years to be near her daughter Judy and family.
Ferne is survived by a son, Gary (Linda) Burmood of Estherville, Iowa; her daughter, Judy (Tom) Lukassen of Pleasant Prairie, Wis.; her four grandchildren, Ron (Jill) Burmood of Sioux Falls, S.D., Fred Lukassen and Jennie Lukassen of Kenosha and Deb (Chris) Knudsen of Pleasant Prairie, Wis,; her six great grandchildren, Stevie Lukassen and Nick Lukassen of Kenosha, Wis., Zach Burmood of Sioux Falls, S.D., Emilee Wolf of Pierre, S.D. and Elliana Knudsen and Abigail Knudsen of Pleasant Prairie, Wis.
She is preceded in death by a daughter in infancy; her husband, Lee Burmood on April 24, 1962; her father Marvin Price Sr. on Sept. 5, 1967; her mother, Winnie Price on Feb. 21, 1979; her sister, Maxine Schlender on Dec. 6, 1984; her brother, Marvin "Bud" Price Jr. on May 8, 1990; and a granddaughter, Jodi (Burmood) Wolf on Feb. 11, 2011.
Funeral services for Ferne will be held on Saturday, Oct. 22, at 10:30 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church (2710 - 14th Street, Columbus, NE). Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service. Memorials in Ferne's name would be appreciated to the Pleasant Prairie United Methodist Church (8405 - 104th Ave. Pleasant Prairie, WI 53158) or to the First United Methodist Church (2710 - 14th St. Columbus, NE 68601).
The family would like to thank Dr. Ziarko and his nurse Cindy, Grande Prairie for making a home for her where she enjoyed playing cards, dancing and making many new friends. And a big thank you to the certain staff that went above and beyond and you know who you are.
