Ann Gates
1913 - 2008
Ann Gates, 95, of Kenosha, passed away Saturday, Dec. 20, 2008, at Hospitality Nursing & Rehabilitation with her family by her side.
Born on Oct. 1, 1913, in Platteville, Wis., she was the daughter of the late Isaac Newton and Lillian Mae (Habel) Edwards.
On April 4, 1950, Ann married Russell H. Gates in Rockford, Ill. They moved from Epworth, Iowa, to Kenosha in 1961 to make their home. He preceded her in death on May 17, 2007.
Ann worked for the Army during WWII at the Nesco Company on St. Paul Avenue in Milwaukee. She made cans for bombs out of sheet metal, 20 mm shells, recapped tires and made soles for Army boots. She also worked as a clerk at St. Vincent DePaul in Kenosha for over 20 years.
Ann loved going to Las Vegas to play the slots and watch the shows with her husband, Russell. She also loved to watch the Milwaukee Brewers. Ann was a great artist, doing mainly drawing and painting. She also enjoyed flower gardening and shopping.
Surviving are her three children, Debra (Greg) Filut of New Berlin, Gary Gates of Kenosha, and Donna Kelley of Kenosha; a brother, Carl Newton Edwards of Galena, Ill.; a sister, Betty Jane Pollard of Belmont, Wis.; four grandchildren, Erik, Tonya, Robert and Brendan; and one great granddaughter, Alyssa.
She was preceded in death by five brothers, Milder, Leroy, Thomas, Maynard, and Robert Edwards; and three sisters, Ella Mae Gleason, Dorothy Edwards and Edna Fuerstenberg.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Jan. 10, 2009, at 2 p.m. at the Proko Funeral Home, Kenosha, Wis. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Safe Harbor Humane Society, 7811 - 60th Avenue, Kenosha, WI 53142.
