Salem seeks volunteers to work on park playgrounds
SALEM — The town is looking for volunteers who want to put a personal stamp on the new Community Park.
The town will be installing two adjoining playgrounds in the 105-acre park in October, and is inviting members of the community to lend a hand.
“There’s a significant savings in doing it ourselves,” said deputy clerk Crysti Neuman.
But more importantly, she said, the town hopes that having community members join together to help build the playgrounds will give volunteers a sense of ownership and civic pride for the new park.
“We’re just looking to have a good, community weekend,” Neuman said.
Salem purchased the property for the park several years ago, and work on the project has been under way since late 2007. Construction of a pavilion and parking lot is complete, and baseball diamonds and a combination soccer and football field installed, although they will not be ready for play until 2011 to allow for healthy turf.
The park is on 256th Avenue between highways AH and SA.
The two playgrounds — one designed for ages 2-5, the second for ages 5-12 — will be installed Oct. 9-11. The town hopes to have teams of about 15 volunteers on hand throughout the weekend to help with the installation.
The Salem Park Commission chose the design for the playgrounds earlier this year, paying $79,400 for the equipment. The town expects to save about $5,000 with the help of the volunteers.
Neuman said volunteers do not need special skills or construction experience.
“Lee Construction will have professional installers there. They’ll set it up and show us how to do it,” she said.
The contractor will provide the tools and will ensure that the equipment is installed properly.
Neumann said individuals or groups interested in volunteering should contact the town hall at 843-2313 or stop at the town hall, 9814 Antioch Road.
Volunteers must be at least 13 years old. Signups also are available at www.townofsalem.net. The deadline for signups is Sept. 28.
