No fireworks, but plenty of activities in Silver Lake for Independence Day
SILVER LAKE — There might not be any fireworks in the sky over Silver Lake this weekend, but there will be much more happening on the ground this year as the village celebrates Independence Day.
“Unfortunately Silver Lake had to cancel the fireworks this year due to finances,” said Andy Lorentz, a founding member of the Silver Lake Chamber of Commerce. “But we have a lot planned. Hopefully it will be the beginning of a new start in the village.”
The chamber and local business owners will host activities to complement the annual Fireman’s Festival, Friday and Saturday at Schmalfeldt Park.
The lineup includes many new events, such as a pet parade, a spaghetti-eating contest and an antique tractor show. Live music, raffles, a beanbag tournament, food, beverages, kids activities and a rubber duck race on the Fox River round out the fun.
“The goal is to replenish the fireworks fund so we can bring them back for next year,” Lorenz said.
The event begins at 6 p.m. Friday with a disc jockey until 10 p.m.
On Saturday, Linda Valentine of the Western Kenosha County Historical Society will make opening remarks and a historical presentation at 11 a.m.
The Community Baptist Church will host children’s games, and the chamber will host the antique farm equipment show as well as a flea and farmers market throughout the day Saturday.
Linda Binanti, from Taste of Italy, is sponsoring the spaghetti-eating contest at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, and Debra Scully, of Scully’s Silver Lake Grill, is hosting the pet parade at 2 p.m. Saturday. Registration for both events can be made in advance or at the event.
“I just thought it would be a lot of fun for the kids,” Scully said of the parade, which will travel around the park and across the stage and includes monetary prizes for first through third place.
