Aiello, Bible bow out
The last two golfers from Kenosha County competing in the 36th annual Mike Bencriscutto Junior Masters Match Play Tournament were eliminated in first-round matches Wednesday at Johnson Park Golf Club in Racine.
Playing in the 18-and-under division, No. 19 seed Paul Bretl of Green Bay defeated Kenosha’s Victor Aiello, the No. 14 seed, 1-up.
In the 16-and-under division, No. 5 seed Billy Fox of Brookfield defeated Matt Bible, the No. 28 seed, 3 and 1.
Bible, of Pleasant Prairie, and Aiello are members of the Tremper golf team.
n State Open: UW-Parkside’s Andy Hansen and Keith Buntrock each earned spots into next month’s Wisconsin State Open at Tuesday’s qualifier at Tuckaway Country Club in Franklin.
Hansen, a senior-to-be, shot a 1-under par 71 (38-33) to share medalist honors with Burlington’s Paul Zarek. Buntrock, a sophomore-to-be, finished in a five-way tie for sixth at 2-over 74 (35-39).
Ten players from Tuesday’s qualifier advanced to the State Open, which will be played August 17-19 at Blackwolf Run in Kohler. Kenosha’s Jordan Elsen, Rick Leslie and Todd Schaap and former UW-P golfer Ben Bendtsen III of Racine were already exempt for the tournament.
Andrew Troyanek, another UW-P golfer, was one of three alternates. He missed the cutoff by one shot with a 3-over 75 (39-36), in a three-way tie for 11th.
Nine players with Kenosha County ties didn’t qualify. They included: Travis Engle (tie for 15th, 76), Jared Elsen (tie for 20th, 77), Rick Elsen (tie for 24th, 78), Michael Keller Jr. (tie for 24th, 78), Corey Sell (tie for 24th, 78), Tim Freres (tie for 32nd, 79), Sam Serdar (tie for 38th, 80), Ben Metz (tie for 47th, 82) and Chad Ebert (tie for 60th, 84).
Tuesday’s qualifier was one of eight held across the state over the last week.
Monday at Geneva National Golf Club’s Trevino Course in Lake Geneva, Kenosha’s Matt Ellis shot a 4-over 76 and tied for 13th, Men’s County Open runner-up Chad Cantwell shot a 78 and tied for 21st, Pleasant Prairie’s Arthur DeWolf shot an 84 and tied for 34th, and Kenosha’s Jamie Young carded an 88 and tied for 37th. None of the four qualified for the State Open.
Monday at Pine Hills Country Club in Sheboygan, Kenosha’s Daniel Sitzberger shot a 13-over 84 (tie for 32nd) and didn’t qualify. Neither did UW-P’s Sean Regan, who shot a 6-over 78 (tie for 18th) Monday at Trappers Turn Golf Club in Wisconsin Dells.
Werwie at Illinois Open
Kenosha’s Carly Werwie shot a 1-under 71 on Saturday to finish in a three-way tie for 11th at the 15th annual Illinois Women’s Open at Mistwood Golf Club in Romeoville, Ill.
Werwie completed the three-day, 54-hole tournament in 5-over 221 (75-75-71), 12 shots behind Michigan State junior-to-be Aimee Neff of Carmel, Ind., (71-70-68) who rallied to defend her title by playing her final nine holes in 4-under 32.
A junior-to-be at the University of Wisconsin, Werwie, 20, started the final round in a tie for 29th before soaring up the leaderboard. She was one of 38 players to survive the 36-hole cut at 8-over 152 after 90 teed off in the first round.
The 2008 Wisconsin Women’s State Golf Association Player of the Year, Werwie posted a 14-over 230 total (77-76-77) and tied for 24th at last year’s Illinois Women’s Open.
WSGA Senior Best-Ball
John Wiley of Kenosha Country Club teamed with Jerry Wridt of Johnson Park Golf Club to finish in a tie for 49th with a 10-over 154 total (76-78) in the low gross division of the WSGA Senior Best-Ball (Four-Ball) Championship on Tuesday at La Crosse Country Club.
Spring Valley Country Club’s Larry Anderson and James Hessefort completed the two-day tournament for players ages 55-64 in 12-over 156 (78-78) and tied for 57th, while Spring Valley’s Mark Olsen and Mike Vernezze tied for 61st at 13-over 157 (75-82).
Jeff Ausen of Merrill Hills Country Club and Jim Rollefson of Tuckaway recorded a one-shot win at 7-under 137 (67-70).
In the senior low net division, Olsen and Vernezze tied for 41st at 3-under 141 (67-74), Wiley and Wridt tied for 47th at 2-under 142 (70-72) and Anderson and Hessefort tied for 55th at 1-under 143 (72-71).
In the super senior low gross division for players 65-and-older, Spring Valley’s Mike Smolinski and Chet Sobol tied for second at 2-over 146 (72-74). Ron Brischke of The Bridges Golf Club and David Grams of Nakoma Country Club placed first out of 13 teams at 1-over 145 (72-73).
Smolinski and Sobol finished fifth in the super senior low net division at 10-under 134 (67-67). Brischke and Grams won it at 15-under 129 (64-65).
Mother-Son Championship
Three teams from Brighton Dale Links competed at the WWSGA Mother-Son Championship on Monday at Washington County Golf Course in Hartford.
Playing an alternate shot format, Karen and Eric Sarbacker shot a 76 and finished second in Championship Flight, two shots behind winners Christine and Joe Stippich (74).
Karen and Daniel Noonan won the First Flight with a 77, while Dolly and Bob Zeihen shot a 96 in the Second Flight.
WSGA Net Partners
Maplecrest Country Club’s Scott Bolman and Terry Kallberg tied for 15th out of 58 teams at the WSGA Net Partners Event No. 5 on Wednesday at Evergreen Golf Club in Elkhorn.
Bolman and Kallberg finished at 1-under 215. Each player’s 18-hole net score and the team’s 18-hole best-ball score were combined to form the 54-hole total.
WPGA Junior Tour
Kenosha’s Jordan Rimkus shot a 26-over 98 (49-49) and finished 51st in the overall boys division at WPGA Junior Tour stop No. 27 on Wednesday at The House on the Rock Resort in Spring Green.
Rimkus placed ninth in the 11-player boys 12-13 age division.
