Aiello shoots a first round 78
Kenosha’s Vic Aiello shot a 78 in the opening round of the 36th annual Mike Bencriscutto Junior Masters State Match Play Tournament Monday at Johnson Park in Racine.
Aiello, who will be a senior at Tremper, is tied for 30th place out of 84 golfers in the 18-and-under division.
The second round of stroke play begins 7 a.m. today. The top 32 players in each age division advance to match play, which gets under way on Wednesday.
Racine Case senior-to-be John Gullberg had low honors with a 66 — two strokes better than Lee Swan of Portage. Gullberg was the 16-and-under runner-up last year.
Scott Ratzburg of Pleasant Prairie shot an 80 and is tied for 44th, while Kenosha’s Cody Peaslee is 73rd with an 88.
In the 16-and-under division, Tom Boockmeier of Green Bay leads the 87-player field with a 70.
Local golfers in the field are Max Aiello (tied for 31st, 81), Riley Smith (tied for 36th, 82), Dustin Day (tied for 47th, 85), Nick Moro (tied for 54th, 88), Brandon Howard (tied for 70th, 92), Nate Nyquist (tied for 73rd, 95) and Ben Gordon (84th, 112).
Olsen, Vernezze 19thMark Olsen and Mike Vernezze of Spring Valley Country Club are tied for 19th place at 3-over 75 after the first round of the WSGA Senior Bestball Championship Monday at the La Crosse Country Club.
Joseph Loomis and Eric Haug of Cedar Creek and Castle Mound shot a 6-under 66 and have a one-stroke lead over two other teams.
