All-County second team capsules
St. Joseph senior Joe Pignotti is the only repeat second-team selection on the 45th annual Kenosha News All-County Boys Basketball Team.
Christian Life’s Caleb Cameron, Wilmot’s Shayne Dorn, Central’s Austin Koeshall, Reuther’s Marcus Ratliff and Bradford’s Isiah Walton — all seniors — also received strong consideration for second-team honors.
Here is a closer look at the second team:
Joe Pignotti, St. Joseph
Stats: 11.8 points, 4.8 rebounds, 2.1 assists.
Honors: All-Midwest Classic Conference Central (second team).
Lowdown: Despite being undersized, the senior had an uncanny ability for scoring against much taller foes in the lane. Also a battler on the boards, he put himself in good rebounding position. In three varsity season, he finished with 552 points. “Joe was our captain and an integral part of our offense,” St. Joseph coach Greg Leech said. “What he gave us offensively will not be easily replaced. More importantly, Joe is a great student with good character and he has been a fine role model for all of our student-athletes.”
Sam Savaglio, Tremper
Stats: 10.9 points, 4.2 rebounds, 1.4 steals.
Honors: All-Southeast Conference South Division (first team).
Lowdown: In his second full varsity season, the high-flying junior increased his offensive production (8.5 ppg as a sophomore) by becoming more of a threat on the perimeter. His return, along with Darell Longstreet and Ruben Williams, will give Tremper one of the top backcourts in the state next season. “Sam is a very smart player,” Tremper coach John Wilhelmson said. “He quietly goes about his business. His shot has improved and that has made his game (slashing to the basket) a lot better. He is going to be one tough senior.”
Russell Strutz, Shoreland
Stats: 12.6 points, 6.2 rebounds, 3.4 assists.
Honors: All-Midwest Classic Conference Central (second team).
Lowdown: One of only three seniors on the Pacers’ roster, the versatile forward demonstrated an unselfish, team-first attitude. In three varsity seasons, he finished with 573 points. Plans to play at Wisconsin Lutheran College. “A very good leader,” Shoreland coach Paul Strutz said about his son, who has three younger brothers and an older sister. “Russell really took a lot of kids under his wing. He had to do a lot for us early in the season. I had him bring the ball up. I asked him to create. I asked him to rebound. I asked him to score. He did a solid job of doing all of those things pretty well.”
Andy Thusius, Shoreland
Stats: 14.6 points, 6.3 rebounds, 1.4 assists.
Honors: All-Midwest Classic Conference Central (honorable mention).
Lowdown: Following in the footsteps of his older brothers Bryan and Steve, who combined for 1,847 points at Shoreland, the junior emerged as the team’s leading scorer. He scored in double figures in 19 games and his 325 points rank 12th on the school’s single-season list. “I joked at our banquet that there’s probably a lot of pressure being the baby in the family, but Andy has really matured into a solid player,” Shoreland coach Paul Strutz said. “He just has a knack like his brothers for being able to put the ball in the hole. He will definitely be a main cog in the machine next year.”
Quardell Young, Bradford
Stats: 8.4 points, 3.9 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 2.4 steals.
Honors: All-Southeast Conference South Division (first team).
Lowdown: The steady sophomore point guard started in every game and showed that the Red Devils are in good hands the next two seasons. Averaged 11.2 points in his final five games and was named the team MVP. Also a solid defender. “Just an excellent kid,” Bradford coach Damon James said. “He definitely grew offensively. I think he started getting a lot more confidence in his abilities at the varsity level. After the season, we sat down and talked about what I expect (next year). It’s going to be a lot, but he can definitely handle it.”
