All-County second team selections
The Kenosha News’ All-County girls basketball second team includes three repeat selections in Wilmot’s Jackie Herman, Tremper’s Rachel Jones and Bradford’s Rachael Wenberg.
Others considered for second-team honors were Bradford’s Olivia Hardy, Central’s Faith Lois, Shoreland’s Bekah Sittig and Tremper’s Alix Stangas.
JACKIE HERMAN
Wilmot
*Stats: 15.7 points, 7.0 rebounds, 2.0 steals.
*Honors: All-Southern Lakes Conference (second team), Milwaukee Journal Sentinel All-Area (honorable mention).
*Lowdown: Despite missing half the season because of injury, her robust numbers are hard to ignore. SLC coaches gave her a postseason honor even though she played in only six of her team’s 12 conference games.
“The conference recognized that she is one of the best players around,” Wilmot coach Rob Sepnafski said. “She led our team offensively and played some great defense. She had the ability to hold her opponent to single digits or scoreless. Jackie is the type of player coaches scout and try to stop.”
BRIANNA JOHN
Wilmot
*Stats: 9.9 points, 7.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists.
*Honors: All-Southern Lakes Conference (honorable mention).
*Lowdown: The senior captain stepped up when Herman was lost for the season. She rarely left the floor and led the Panthers in scoring in seven of the last 11 games.
“Brianna was our leader throughout the season,” Wilmot coach Rob Sepnafski said. “She played 30 to 32 minutes each night. She played everything from point guard to center and usually covered the other team’s best player. Brianna always found a way to help us stay competitive.”
RACHEL JONES
Tremper
*Stats: 10.0 points, 3.7 rebounds, 1.9 steals.
*Honors: All-Southeast Conference South Division (honorable mention).
*Lowdown: Her natural position is small forward, but the junior saw action at just about every spot on the floor and was Tremper’s most talented player.
“She had to do whatever she could,” Tremper coach Rod Gross said. “Obviously, teams keyed on her, but she still had some big games. I don’t think she was as consistent as she needs to be, so that’s something that she has to improve on for next year.”
KASEY KLEINER
Shoreland
*Stats: 9.1 points, 2.4 assists, 2.1 rebounds, 2.1 steals.
*Honors: All-Midwest Classic Conference South (second team).
*Lowdown: The sophomore was thrust into the starting point guard spot, allowing Dawn Grashen to move to the off guard position.
“Kasey had to adjust on the run,” Shoreland coach Bruce Heckmann said. “She learned to get the team into an offensive set and became especially adept at setting up our shooters on the perimeter by drawing the defense to her. Also, she learned to take the shots we needed her to take to keep the defense honest.”
RACHAEL WENBERG
Bradford
*Stats: 11.9 points, 7.8 rebounds, 1.5 blocked shots, shot 57 percent from the floor.
*Honors: All-Southeast Conference South Division (first team).
*Lowdown: The junior center increased her offensive production from her sophomore season. She scored in double figures in her last seven games and 12 of the last 13.
“Rachael worked extremely hard this year and was one of the most consistent players on our team,” Bradford coach Jessica Stevens said. “She was often matched up with some of the best post players in the conference and proved that she can play with anyone. Next year we will look to her to help lead the team and continue to provide a strong inside presence.”
