KENOSHA NEWS STAFF

Just like at last week’s Southeast Conference Meet, the Tremper and Bradford swim teams finished first and second in Saturday afternoon’s WIAA Division-1 sectional at Racine Park.

The Southeast Conference champion Trojans captured their fifth sectional title in six years with 338 points and the SEC runner-up Red Devils were a close second with 309. Greenfield/Greendale placed third in the 11-team meet with 259 points and Badger/Big Foot was fourth with 243.

“It’s been a good little run for us,” Tremper coach Mike McKay said.

The second-place finish is the best-ever by a Bradford team at a sectional.

“We’re feeling great,” Bradford coach Franz Feldmeier said. “This is a team that doesn’t quit. They’re just a bunch of great kids. It was nice to see Tremper and us go 1-2 again and be able to say, ‘Hey, swimming is doing very well in Kenosha.’ ”

The winner in each of the meet’s 12 events automatically qualified for next Saturday’s WIAA State Meet at the UW-Natatorium in Madison. In addition, the next 18 fastest times in each event from the state’s six sectionals will advance as special qualifiers.

Bradford got the meet off to a good start on Friday night when Lee Anderson finished first in diving. The sophomore bested his score from last week’s SEC Meet and finished with 370.20 points. In addition to establishing a new school record, Anderson became the first Bradford diver — male or female — to claim a sectional title.

“We’re so proud of that,” Feldmeier said.

Tremper’s lone automatic qualifier came in the 500 freestyle when senior Ryan Schmidt (4:58.12) edged Bradford sophomore Joe DeVroy (4:59.83). With a time under five minutes, DeVroy is in good position to be named as a special qualifier.

“It was probably one of the most exciting races of the day,” McKay said. “It was a come-from-behind victory. You don’t see that very much in the 500. Just a determined senior. He poured it on in the end.”

Schmidt also took second in the 200 freestyle in 1:54.24.

Tremper’s Andrew Griffey should be a lock for State in the 100 backstroke with his second-place time of 53.13. Bradford’s John DeVroy placed third in the event in 54.73.

Griffey’s fourth-place time of 22.11 in the 50 freestyle could also be good enough to qualify.

Both Feldmeier and McKay were both confident that two of their relays should receive some good news from the WIAA.

In the 200 medley, the Bradford team of Joe DeVroy, Andrew Heuser, John DeVroy and Patrick Stephens finished second in 1:42.23, while the Tremper team of Griffey, Aubrey Langley, Alex Lopez and Riley Seebeck took third in 1:42.71.

In the 200 freestyle, the Bradford team of Stephens, Johnas Lohse, John Stuligross and John DeVroy finished second in 1:32.34.

In the 400 freestyle, the Tremper team of Griffey, Drake Koster, Ron Schaefer and Seebeck finished second in 3:22.39.

John DeVroy just missed going under the two-minute mark (2:00.03) with his runner-up finish in the 200 individual medley.

“We set our goal for six events,” Feldmeier said. “I am pretty positive that we will qualify in six events.”
