Kenosha bowler Lennie Boresch and his Milwaukee-based Linds Limited team bolted to the top spot in the team standings in the 106th United States Bowling Congress Open Championships Sunday night at the Cashman Center in Las Vegas.

Lind’s Limited, which has amassed 11 titles in 141 years of USBC Open Championships experience, proved that it is still as competitive as ever with games of 1,081, 1,216 and 1,152 for a total team score of 3,449.

“This is a big score and it will be hard to beat,” USBC media relations director Jason Pinter said in an e-mail.

Turbo 2-N-1 Grips 1 of Madison previously held the Regular Team lead with 3,403.

A total of 17,200 teams and nearly 90,000 bowlers will compete in the tournament, which opens began in February and runs for 154 consecutive days, concluding July 24.

Boresch paced Linds Limited with a 743 series, which included the second perfect game of his 28-year tournament career. He was followed by Dale Traber (716), Gary Daroszewski (696), Ryan Lever (667) and Gus Yannaras (627). Boresch’s 300 was the 11th of the 2009 event.

Traber, who became an exempt player on the Lumber Liquidators Professional Bowlers Association Tour following his appearance at the Open Championships in 2005, made his return to the team after a three-year absence.

“It was a pleasure to have Dale back, and that made a huge difference for me personally because he’s one guy I can really relate to, and his incredible competitiveness helps bring that out in the rest of us,” said Boresch, who also rolled a 300 game at the 1989 event in Wichita, Kansas. “From what I heard about the lane condition, I thought 3,400 was a big number, but we really turned it on at the end, and we got there.”

The team’s experience shined through down the homestretch as it bounced back from a few late open frames and threw 12 of a possible 15 strikes in the final frame to lock up the lead.

“We picked each other up the whole night because that’s what a team does,” Boresch said. “We’ve been doing this a long time. We could’ve put our heads down, but we helped each other out and rallied back.”

Seven lanes away, Sack Toe of Sacramento, Calif., was trying to erase a 62-pin deficit after two games and surge past Linds Limited, but fell short in the 10th frame and finished with 3,427 on games of 1,097, 1,138 and 1,192.

Daroszewski and Yannaras, the 1989 Regular Doubles champions, each celebrated tournament milestones with their 30th and 25th tournament appearances, respectively. Daroszewski also is a member of the 1982 and 1983 Team All-Events champions and teamed up with Yannaras, Traber, Boresch and Steve Brinkman to win the event again in 2000.
