Bradford girls debut with a silver
Not a bad debut.
In its first year of existence, the Bradford girls team took second in the Wisconsin High School Bowling Club State Championships, which concluded Sunday at the Ashwaubenon Bowling Alley in Green Bay.
In other action, Bradford’s Riley Smith took second in the boys singles finals, Tremper’s Sarah Pobloski, who rolled a perfect game, was runner-up in the girls singles finals and the Tremper boys placed second in the boys team finals.
In the girls finals, Bradford won three matches to advance to the championship match where it fell to Plymouth, 480-365. To face Plymouth, Bradford disposed of DeForest 413-389, Tremper 383-356 and Bay Port 361-338.
Members of the Bradford team, which bowled out of the Guttormsen Recreation Center, were Brittany Dile, Megan Gerou, Tori Hedges, Lisa Hesse, Crystal Ostrum, Jenny Rettmueller and Rochelle Smith. The coaches were A.J. Hedges and Ron Smith.
With the top five teams advancing to the stepladder finals, Bradford emerged from Friday-Saturday action fourth in the field of 30. Bradford had a 15-game total of 2,730. Tremper was third at 2,974 with Bay Port second (2,977) and Plymouth first (3,083).
In girls singles, Pobloski fell in the stepladder finals to Bay Port’s Caitlin Polarek 245-209. Pobloski fired a six-game total of 1,378 to finish first through the Friday-Saturday rounds. She rolled her 300 in her second game. Polarek won two matches for the right to meet Pobloski.
In boys singles, Smith posted three victories to setup a meeting with Oshkosh West’s Matthew Mead in the stepladder finals. Smith lost to Mead 216-201 for the title. Smith beat Sheboygan South’s Trevor Yonan 226-210, Bay Port’s Brian Polcin 233-177 and Tremper’s Kyle Peterson 233-212 to reach the final.
Peterson came through the early rounds second with a 1,439, including a high game of 257. Mead was first at 1,507 and Smith was fifth at 1,401 with a high game of 279.
In the boys stepladder team finals, Menomonee Falls edged Tremper 383-381 for the title. The victory capped a run which saw Falls beat Amherst, Franklin and Ashwaubenon to get to the final match.
Tremper emerged from Friday-Saturday rounds first with a 3,290.
