MUSKEGO — Bradford is back in the playoffs & with a bang.

The Red Devils established what is believed to be a school scoring record with a 62-19 victory over Muskego on Friday night.

The victory moved Bradford to 6-0 overall and 3-0 in the Southeast Conference, qualifying the Red Devils for the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association state playoffs, their third straight playoff berth under third-year coach Jed Kennedy.

The team has lost in the third round of the playoffs each of the past two seasons, but the firepower on this team has Kennedy truly excited.

“People know we’re good offensively,” he said. “It’s not a secret anymore. We played exceptionally well tonight offensively.

“It’s fun. We’re having a lot of fun right now.”

The fun began with Gino DeBartolo once again Friday. The junior quarterback rushed 10 times for 147 yards and four touchdowns, all in the first half. Torrie Tyson added seven rushes for 78 yards and two touchdowns, and Cody Brady had 46 yards and a touchdown, as Bradford pounded Muskego for 431 yards rushing on 43 carries.

Bradford dominated from the start, racing to a 21-0 lead less than seven minutes into the game on touchdown runs of 1, 42 and 26 yards by DeBartolo. Tyson’s two touchdowns put the Red Devils up 35-7 late in the first half.

Muskego, however responded with a 13-play, 69-yard drive to make it 35-13 after a botched extra point. And the Warriors looked poised to score again after they recovered the onside kick with 53.2 seconds left in the half. But Bradford defensive lineman Michael Mayfield picked off quarterback Adam Schulz’s screen pass on the second play of the Muskego drive and returned it 44 yards to the Warrior 22-yard line.

Four plays later, and with 10 seconds left in the quarter, DeBartolo scored his fourth touchdown of the first half and crushed any chance of a Muskego comeback.

“He’d be a great fullback, he’d be a great halfback, he’d be a great tailback,” Kennedy said of DeBartolo. “He’s a good one. He’s a smart player. He’s a strong kid. I don’t know how many tackles he breaks every single week.”

After Brady scored 1:35 into the third quarter, Kennedy pulled his regulars, and backups Zach Swisher and Vonte Jackson joined the fun with late scores that truly made it a historic offensive night - despite a running clock for much of the second half.

“When we made our substitutions tonight, at times it looked like the play increased,” Kennedy said. “We went right at their No. 1 defense with our twos.”

Trevor Hergert had two touchdowns for Muskego, and Schulz looked good throwing the ball, but he was intercepted three times. It was the 12th straight loss for the Warriors.

Bradford, meanwhile, is rolling as the WIAA playoffs near. The team has topped the 50-point mark three times this season, and tallied 49 points in their season opener.

“That’s the first step: First we’ve got to qualify,” Kennedy said. “Then we’ve to worry about a great seed. That’s really what we talk about around here.

“We have put ourselves in a position to play late into the quarterfinals the last couple of years, and we don’t even talk about that stuff. This is a hungry group of kids.”
