Bradford secures a No. 2 seed
Bradford football coach Jed Kennedy has been around long enough to know the implications of looking past any opponent, especially once the postseason arrives.
However, it would be impossible not to think what could lie ahead.
The undefeated Red Devils secured a No. 2 seed and are one of three county schools — joining crosstown rival Tremper and St. Joseph — headed to the playoffs as the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association announced its pairings for all seven divisions on Friday.
Bradford (9-0) hosts Milwaukee Bay View (5-3) at Indian Trail Stadium, while Tremper (5-4) takes on Milwaukee Riverside (7-1) at Pulaski Field in a pair of first-round games 7 p.m. Tuesday. The winners square off in the second round next Saturday.
Bradford and Tremper met in the postseason for the first time on Oct. 27, 2007 at Ameche Field. The Red Devils prevailed 21-13 in front of a crowd of approximately 4,200.
“I know there’s definitely a lot of people in Kenosha that would like to see it (again),” Kennedy said. “I know both Tremper and Bradford are worried about the first-round games. That’s our job as coaches, to make sure our kids are focused on the game at hand and not looking ahead.”
St. Joseph (5-4) plays at No. 2 seed Cedar Grove-Belgium (9-0) in a Division-5 first-round game 7 p.m. Tuesday.
Wilmot (5-4) was left out of the Division-2 field.
Here is a closer look at the pairings:
Bradford satisfied
There were no surprises for the Red Devils, who expected a No. 2 seed and anticipated they’d be paired in the same bracket as top-seeded Marquette (9-0). The two teams could meet in a high-powered, third-round game on Nov. 6 or Nov. 7.
“Obviously, that’s a long ways away,” Kennedy said. “We thought we’d be matched up with Marquette, but you have to play everyone once anyway.”
Bradford, ranked 10th in Division-1 in the latest Associated Press State poll, will first shift its attention on containing one of the state’s elite running backs in Bay View’s Dominique Robinson.
“We know Bay View has a lot of speed, a lot of athletes and a good running back,” Kennedy said. “A very good running back.”
Bay View finished sixth in the Milwaukee City Conference with a 5-3 mark. The Redcats enter the postseason with losses in two of their last three games, falling to Milwaukee King and Milwaukee Riverside before claiming a victory over Milwaukee Washington in the regular season finale.
Tremper faces speed
The Trojans, who enter the postseason unseeded, find themselves in a battle of power versus finesse in facing the ultra-athletic Riverside in the first round.
“We know we’re going in as an underdog,” Matrise said. “We had a good idea we’d be playing them. We scouted them and we know we’re capable of playing with them. The one thing we know we’re going to have to take care of is not letting them use that breakaway speed on us.”
Riverside finished second in the MCC with a 7-1 record. The Tigers are riding a seven-game win streak in which they’ve outscored the opposition by an incredible 284-7.
Kennedy is plenty familiar with both teams, having scouted Riverside this season.
“I think Tremper is the favorite in that one, I really do,” Kennedy said. “Tremper is physical and I think will give Riverside some trouble.”
St. Joseph rolling
The Lancers enter the postseason on a high note after securing a playoff berth with four straight victories. St. Joseph will likely need its best effort of the season against No. 2 seed Cedar Grove-Belgium.
“We’re up to the challenge,” St. Joseph coach Jim Kenesie said. “Cedar Grove is a very good football team and they don’t do anything fancy. They’re going to line up and run the football at you.”
Cedar Grove-Belgium, ranked third in the latest AP State poll (enrollment under 500), has yet to be challenged this season. The Rockets went 7-0 in the Central Lakeshore Conference and outscored their opponents 291-32.
