Bradford’s Iverson leads the way
Here’s a look at the Bradford and Tremper qualifiers for the 40th annual Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Division 1 State Swimming and Diving championships at the UW Natatorium in Madison today.
Dana Iverson, Bradford
The junior qualified for the 100-yard backstroke by winning the event at last weekend’s Bradford’s Sectional. Iverson is seeded fourth with a time of 58.57 seconds. The time is a school record and marked the first she had ever cracked the 59-second mark. Vying to become the second girls State champion in city history and the first since the great Jenny Gelden won the 100-yard butterfly for Bradford in 2003. Arrowhead Katie Jones is seeded first at :57.36, D.C. Everest sophomore Zoe Huddleston is second at :57.81 and Shawano/Bonduel freshman Mackenzie Bass is third at :58.02. Iverson was eighth in this event a year ago at :59.06. Madison Memorial Jackie Powell was first at :56.10. Powell is not competing in this event although she did qualify in the 100 freestyle and 200 freestyle. Finished 11th in this event as a freshman at 1:00.82. Also the Southeast Conference champion in the event... Iverson also made the 100-yard freestyle field as a special qualifier. Time of 54.03 was second at the Bradford Sectional and seeds her 16th today. ... Will also swim with Tiara Thompson, Brittany Beyer and Jodi Vanderford in the 200 freestyle relay.
Jaclyn Pitts, Bradford
Senior qualified for State for the second time by finishing among the top 24 statewide in sectional competition last week. Pitts took second at the Bradford Sectional with a school-record 374.45 points. She broke her own school-record by 10 points. Her score is the 13th highest at State. Racine Park’s Rachel Margis won the sectional with 387.55 points. Madison West senior Kyle Rosenstock fashioned the highest score at the state’s six sectionals. ... Pitts took 16th a year ago at State with 279.65.
Emily Werve, Tremper
Freshman made State by finishing among the top 24 statewide in sectional action last week. Werve, who possesses a gymnastics background, finished third with 356.70 points. Her score is the lowest in the field. ... Tremper has qualified at least one diver for State every year since at least 1999.
Bradford 200-yard freestyle
Iverson, Tiara Thompson, Brittany Beyer and Jodi Vanderford made State as a special qualifier. The quartet advanced with a school-record time of 1:42.29 at sectional, where they were fourth behind champion Badger, Case and Burlington ... Waukesha South/Mukwonago is seeded first at 1:38.02. ... The team is seeded 23rd at State. Beyer is a senior while Thompson and Vanderford are sophomores. ... Bradford took 24th in this event at State a year ago at 1:44.37 with Iverson, Morgan Sax, Vanderford and Thompson swimming. ... Beyer swam with Iverson, Courtney Blaisdell and Meg Beasley in this event at State in 2007 and finished 23rd in 1:42.97.
