Central sets up rematch vs. Wilmot
There would be no overlooking Oregon in the postseason opener for the Central softball team on Tuesday.
The seventh-seeded Falcons scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning and blanked the visiting Panthers, 4-0, in a WIAA Division-1 regional semifinal.
With the victory, Central (15-6) will play at second-seeded Wilmot (18-2) in the regional final 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
“We have been talking as a team about approaching every game with confidence,” Central coach Kerri Hintz said. “Today they had it and it showed.
“We made consistent contact and did a nice job of capitalizing on their weaknesses by executing when we needed to. I’m proud of the way they played today.”
Heather Pohlman tossed a two-hitter with no walks and five strikeouts. The Central defense committed only one error.
Jess Hrncar led off the first with a double and advanced to third when Bryanna Heckel reached on an error. Randi Rederer brought home the first run with a sacrifice fly and Heckel scored on a single by Jessie Clark. A sacrifice bunt by Jessica Shane moved Clark to second and she scored on a single by Hayden Krueger.
Hrncar went 3-for-4 to lead a nine-hit attack.
Tremper fallsTremper outhit Janesville Craig 14-6, but ended up on the short end of a 7-5 score in a WIAA Division-1 regional semifinal at Dawson Park.
The Trojans (12-8) took a 1-0 lead in the first on a Lauren Boresch groundout, but the Cougars took control with four in the third and three in the fourth against Tiegen Leable.
“(We) failed to get clutch hits when we needed them,” Tremper coach Doug Townsend said. “I am proud of this team, we are young and have a good future.”
Gabbi Garcia went 4-for-4 with two RBI. Jessie Werbie was 3-for-4 and Diane Ewens was 2-for-4 with two RBI.
Janesville Craig will face top-ranked Bradford in the regional final at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
