Chalery, UW-P cruise by Pumas
Apparently Crystal Chalery likes playing up top.
Chalery responded to a position switch with two goals and two assists as the UW-Parkside women’s soccer team swamped Saint Joseph’s College 6-1 in a Great Lakes Valley Conference match at windy Wood Road Field Sunday.
“We made a couple of changes with our lineup and one was to put Crystal up top, which makes us more dangerous,” UW-P coach Troy Fabiano said.
Parkside may have been in need of a little tinkering.
The Rangers entered Sunday’s match burdened with a three-game losing streak during which they had been outscored 4-0.
The valley of the skid was a 1-0 setback to Indianapolis Friday, which halted a 24-match unbeaten streak at Wood Road Field. The losing streak had also dropped Parkside from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Division-2 national rankings for the first time all season.
“We needed to get some momentum and make some changes because we haven’t gotten the results we wanted in each of the last three games,” said Fabiano, whose team is 6-3-2 overall, 5-3-1 in the GLVC and ranked seventh in the latest Midwest Region rankings.
Chalery, a freshman from Milwaukee, ignited a five-goal barrage at 26:30. The goal, assisted by Becky Zirlin and Meredith Novak, broke a 1-1 tie. Zirlin opened the scoring at 1:12 off an assist from Chalery but the Pumas (0-10, 0-8) pulled even at 18:56.
In an absolutely dominant second half, Parkside outscored SJC 4-0 and outshot the Pumas 19-0. UW-P goalie Cassie Glodowski was credited with one save.
Chalery scored her second goal at 70:07 with help from Caitlin Moon and Natalie Brown. Novak and Brown also scored in the second half with Jasmine Espino and Shannon Becker receiving assists.
