Cubs, Sox renew rivalry today
Don’t tell the Cubs and the White Sox that their interleague meeting with each other today has lost some of its luster.
The Chicago rivals will face off at Wrigley Field at 1 p.m. (WGN-TV/Cubs and Comcast/White Sox) with both teams mired in slumps and barely in contention.
“Every time any team plays in Wrigley Field, it’s exciting,” said Sox manager Ozzie Guillen following his team’s 4-2 win at Minnesota Wednesday afternoon.
Today’s game is a makeup from a June 16 rainout.
The White Sox lead the season series 3-2. The teams split at Wrigley Field July 17-18 and the Sox took two of three at U.S. Cellular Field July 26-28.
“Does it feel any bigger than the Sox series before?” Cubs’ pitcher Rich Harden said on cubs.com.
“I don’t know. From what I’ve seen, it’s like they’re always big series. It’s pretty intense.
“But every game from now on should be important to everybody here. It’s kind of do or die right now.”
Ryan Dempster (8-7) will start for the Cubs opposite rookie Carlos Torres (0-0). Dempster is 0-1 with a 6.55 ERA in two starts against the Sox this season.
Torres, a right-hander making his third big league start, has never faced the Cubs.
