SOMERS — It was payback time for the UW-Parkside women’s basketball team.

Led by the first 20-20 game in Parkside history from junior forward Brittany Hogen, the Rangers continued their impressive start to the season in out-muscling NAIA Robert Morris (Ill.), 85-70, in a non-conference game Saturday at the DeSimone Gymnasium.

Parkside (7-1) lost to Robert Morris, 71-69, in overtime in last year’s meeting in Chicago.

“I don’t know if it was necessarily revenge, but everyone remembers losing to them last year,” Parkside coach Jenny Kenesie said. “I know I remember it like it was yesterday and I know a lot of our returners do as well. More than anything, it was about us going out and executing against a team that really likes to get after it and is extremely athletic.”

Robert Morris (10-5) received votes in the latest Women’s Basketball Coaches Association NAIA Division I poll. The Eagles were coming off of a 59-57 victory over visiting Carthage on Friday.

In a matchup of size versus quickness, Parkside eventually won the battle in shooting 49 percent (27-for-55) and grabbing a whopping 52 rebounds. The Rangers led 34-26 at halftime and held a double-digit lead for nearly the entire second half.

Hogen, a 6-foot junior, finished with a career-high 28 points and 21 rebounds.

“It’s always a tough game against (Robert Morris),” Hogen said. “Sometimes we think that we can play to their fast pace. The main thing was to play our game within our system. They like to run-and-gun and play a lot of one-on-one. We needed to slow it down and control the pace of the game.”

In what is becoming a Parkside staple, the Rangers had four players score in double figures. Brittany Beyer complemented Hogen’s big game with 20 points and 11 rebounds, Amanda Gibson had 18 points and four rebounds and Jadee Rooney tallied 11 points and four assists.

Robert Morris’ Jessica Harris played all 40 minutes and finished with 29 points and eight rebounds. The Eagles shot a chilly 35 percent (28-for-80) from the field and just 20 percent (4-for-20) from behind the 3-point arc. Harris had all four 3-pointers.

“We had to do a good job of defending and making good decisions on the offensive end,” Kenesie said. “I’m proud of my kids to be able to come out with a solid victory.”

Parkside hosts Cardinal Stritch (10-1) in a non-conference game 3 p.m. today. The Rangers then travel to Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) on Tuesday.

“We have to regroup and make sure we’re ready to go,” Kenesie said. “It’s a short turnaround, but our kids are ready.”
