DLB sweeps city softball
The two major softball tournaments in Kenosha this summer could be quickly summed up like this: There was DLB/Sports Physical Therapy, and then there was everybody else.
After claiming the Rotary Tournament title for the second consecutive year last month by extending its winning streak to 11 games in that event, DLB finished 6-0 and outscored its opponents 119-39 this weekend in capturing the 45th annual Kiwanis Breakfast Club City Tournament on Sunday at Poerio Park.
DLB, last year’s City Tournament runner-up, pummeled Limbach/Super Sports 22-9 in Sunday’s championship game to become the first team since Tirabassi in 2003 and only the fourth team since 1995 to pull off a Kenosha men’s summer softball sweep.
“Everybody shoots for the Rotary and then if you can get the City in the same year, it’s a big deal,” said DLB pitcher/coach Travis Clark. “I don’t think it’s happened too often ... so it’s a big deal to win both.”
With the wind blowing out, DLB hit 10 home runs to Limbach’s zero in the championship game.
Travis Clark and third baseman Keith Anderson launched three homers apiece, shortstop Mike Umscheid hit two, and John Czarnecki (grand slam) and Dan Hall each hit one over the regulation-length fences that measure 310 feet down the lines and 330 feet to center field.
“A lot of it has to do with wind conditions and hitting,” Anderson said of his team’s dominance this weekend. “Everything we do revolves around hitting.
“A lot of guys, we hit about 400 balls a week. We concentrate more on hitting than anything. So it’s tough for people to play against (us) when we hit that well.”
DLB defeated Native Construction 18-6 and defending City champion Woman’s Touch Painting/Big Shotz 21-7 on Sunday to secure a spot in the championship round.
After losing to Tirabassi on Saturday morning, Limbach won its final three games Saturday and first four games Sunday coming out of the losers bracket before running into the DLB buzzsaw.
“They’re one of the better teams around in the Midwest. We had a good day but we just ran out of gas at the end,” said Limbach catcher Rob Reschke, whose team ousted WTP/Big Shotz in the losers bracket championship. “They’re the class of this tournament, so you’ve got to come with your ‘A’ game to beat these guys.”
“They have a bunch of great ballplayers, and we knew going into this game that we were going to have to deal with (their power) and just try to play our game. We were hoping to string a few hits together, but the long ball was definitely the difference.”
DLB’s schedule is far from over, however. The team, which also won a USSSA Class B State tournament in Illinois last weekend, will play one World tournament in Ohio and two in Florida starting Labor Day weekend.
For now, though, DLB will have an opportunity to savor its rare summer sweep on the Kenosha diamonds.
“As a Kenosha guy, it’s always been one of those things that you’ve always wanted to do,” Anderson said. “It’s very gratifying to do it.”
Added Clark: “There’s a lot of good teams in Kenosha. We just put it together at the right time, had a good mixture of guys and everybody hit well all weekend. There were probably about a half dozen teams that could have won this tournament. We were just clicking at the right time.”
