KENOSHA NEWS STAFF

There was one clunker in an otherwise solid round for Kenosha’s Jordan Elsen in the first round of the Wisconsin State Open on Monday at Blackwolf Run in Kohler.

Recording birdies on four of his first eight holes, Elsen carded a quadruple-bogey on the par-3 ninth hole, erasing his hot start.

The University of Wisconsin senior-to-be had one bogey and one birdie on the back nine to finish with an even-par 72 (36-36). He is in a four-way tie for 11th place out of 156 golfers.

Defending champion Ryan Helminen of Appleton fired a 7-under-par 65 to take a two-stroke lead. Helminen, an assistant professional at SentryWorld in Stevens Point, birdied four of the final five holes en route to a 5-under 31 on the back nine.

Neil Johnson of River Falls was alone in second place at 67, and former University of Wisconsin golfer Dan Woltman, the 2007 champion, shared third place with Charlie Delsman at 69.

Elsen is fourth out of amateur players, trailing Woltman, Jack Schultz (70) and Derrick Maier (71).

Other local players in the field were Todd Schaap and Rick Leslie.

Schaap shot an 8-over 80 (43-37) and is tied for 96th, while Leslie shot a 10-over 82 (41-41) and is tied for 112th.

The tournament continues today and will conclude with 36 holes Wednesday.
