Errors hurt Lakeland in State final
The Lakeland Senior All-Star baseball team fell short in its bid for a State title.
Lakeland committed five errors leading to six unearned runs in falling to Madison West, 7-1, in the championship game of the Wisconsin State Senior League Tournament Saturday at Ceniti Park in Verona.
“We made some uncharacteristic fielding errors,” Lakeland coach Jeff Neave said. “We’re usually very solid in the field.”
Lakeland, a team of 15- and 16-year-olds, advanced to the State tournament by winning the District 6 championship last weekend. The majority of the players competed on the Central High School freshman team last year.
Lakeland ace Dalton Sjong went three innings. Luke Podella and Anthony Anichini pitched the final four innings. Mike Sorensen, Sam Shelton and Jason Gackowski combined for the team’s three hits.
Madison West advanced to the upcoming regionals in Columbia, Missouri.
U12 Predators fall in final

“It was a good season,” Predators’ coach Earl Smith said.
The Predators couldn’t hold a 3-0 lead in the final. Marshall Gilbert delivered a two-RBI single in the second inning and Pete Schuler connected on a lead-off solo home run in the fourth in giving the Predators a 3-0 edge. Southeastern scored all seven of its runs in the fifth inning.
Pleasant Prairie opened with a 17-8 victory over Matton, Ill., and an 11-10 win against Griffith, Ind., 11-10. The Predators then suffered their first loss in falling to Southeastern 11-1 before advancing to the championship game with a 14-4 win over Griffth.
