Feuerbach, Aschenbrener make State
The St. Joseph doubles team of Harry Feuerbach and Ryan Aschenbrener qualified for the WIAA Individual State Tournament by finishing fourth in the Division-2 sectional Thursday at the Pleasant Valley Tennis Club in Jackson.
Seeded fourth, Feuerbach and Aschenbrener defeated the top-seeded team of Jake Miller and John Chamberlain of Shorewood, 7-6, 6-7, 6-3. The upset guaranteed the Lancer duo a spot at State next Thursday at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison.
“They were not expected to do that,” St. Joseph coach Stu Short said. “It was an exciting match to watch. A lot of the other teams came over to watch.”

Feuerbach and Aschenbrener lost their next match to Evan Fry and Nathan Wingfield of Martin Luther, 6-3, 6-4. In the third-place match, the two Lancers fell to Matt Joost and Paolo Pahm of Racine Prairie, 6-1, 6-4.
Feuerbach is normally the Lancers’ No. 1 singles player while Aschenbrener is the No. 2 singles player, Short said.
“They wanted to increase their chances to go to state so they moved to No 1 doubles and obviously it worked,” Short said. “For two singles players to adapt their game to doubles in a short time is very impressive.”
Short said the two had played three times at doubles during the season, going 2-1.
Tremper duo triumphs
Tremper picked up one more title in its WIAA Division-1 sectional on Thursday.
Having already clinched the team title on Wednesday, the Trojans padded their point total when Tomas Goldsmith and Connor Hildebrandt topped Chris Besaw and Andy Bjerregaard, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4, in the No. 1 doubles final. The match was suspended after two sets on Wednesday and resumed on Thursday at the East Side Tennis & Fitness Club.
Goldsmith and Hildebrandt qualified for the Individual State Tournament next week in Madison.
Tremper finished with 48 points and won its third consecutive sectional title. The Trojans will play in the State Team Tournament June 12-13 in Madison.
Badger was second with 33 points.
