Of all the shots in soccer — the chip shot, banana shot, bicycle kick, volley, header and plenty others — this one will forever been known as the human cannonball.

Tremper’s Matt Vecchitto sacrificed his body for the sake of his team’s season as the state-ranked Trojans edged Lake Geneva Badger, 2-1, in overtime in a Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Division-1 sectional final Saturday at Ameche Field.

Vecchitto scored both goals, including the game-winner 33 seconds into overtime off of a corner kick by Henrik Egly. In a loose-ball situation in front of the Badger net, Vecchitto dove head first just inches off the ground and blasted the ball into the goal.

“I just kind of threw my body at it and it went in,” Vecchitto said. “We just kept battling. Everyone came out and gave 100 percent. That’s what it takes to get to State.”

The Trojans, ranked sixth in the latest Wisconsin Soccer Coaches Association Division-1 poll, secured their seventh State appearance in school history and second State berth in the past three years. Tremper (22-1-3) plays Southeast Conference rival Muskego in a State quarterfinal game 6 p.m. Thursday at Uihlein Park in Milwaukee.

Tremper suffered its only loss of the season in a 2-1 setback against host Muskego on Sept. 11.

“(Saturday’s) goal is accomplished,” Tremper coach Chris Tindall said. “But these guys have said early on that getting to State isn’t good enough. They fully expect to step on the field expecting to win regardless of what eleven players we throw out there.”

The Trojans, who will play the entire postseason without their top scorer David Caban, could now be without another offensive threat as senior forward Jesus Oseguera received a red card against Badger. Oseguera’s status for Thursday’s game is still unknown, according to Tindall. Caban is ineligible due to a commitment with the U-18 Men’s National Team.

Oseguera was hit with a yellow card, followed immediately with a red card, with four minutes remaining and was forced to leave the game. It was one of eight yellow cards against the Trojans. Tremper entered with 12 yellow cards issued in its first 25 games of the season.

The game quickly turned physical and eventually spiraled out of control in the final four minutes of regulation.

“The kids overcame a lot of obstacles,” Tindall said. “They’ve played a lot of tough opponents. We’ve played in a lot of bad elements. Today, we overcame some other obstacles, but they always kept their eye on the prize and never gave up on it. I’m immensely proud of this group.”

Vecchitto opened the scoring in the 24th minute. The junior took a crossing pass from Nathan Oster and drilled a left-footed shot off the near post. The shot deflected off of Badger’s Benjamin Larwa and into the back of the net.

Badger (23-2-2) tied it in the 77th minute on a penalty kick from Kyle Blechner.

With the game headed to sudden-death overtime, Tremper won the kickoff and quickly pushed upfield. The Trojans were awarded a corner kick on a ball played by Egly and capitalized with one of the most creative goals of the season.

“Vecchitto just sold himself out,” Tindall said. “I thought when he left his feet it was one of those things where he was going to go into the goalpost to get it done. Fortunately, he got the ball and not the post.”

Both teams finished with 17 shots on goal.

Tindall credited the defensive play of goalkeeper Jimmy Jones, along with a formidable back line of Connor Hildebrandt, Adam Janic, Gabe Puterbaugh and Matt Steinmetz.

Jones made a diving save in the 62nd minute on a dangerous Badger free kick.
