Goethals runs to another title
Megan Goethals and Lukas Verzbicas won Foot Locker Cross Country Championships Midwest Regional races Saturday on the Dannehl National Cross Country Course at UW-Parkside.
Goethals, of Rochester, Minn., won the girls seeded race in claiming her second consecutive Midwest Region title. The 17-year old high school senior completed the 5,000-meter course in 17 minutes and 24 seconds.
Verzbicas of Orland Hills, Ill., topped the 223-runner boys seeded field in 15:34.
The top 10 finishers in each of the boys and girls seeded races advance to the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships National Finals on Saturday, Dec.12 at Morley Field, Balboa Park in San Diego, Calif.
The program also included Freshman-Sophomore Boys race, a Junior-Senior Boys race, a Freshman-Sophomore Girls race and an Open race.
Goethals pulls awayThe girls’ seeded race, which featured 270 runners, began with a pack of 10 runners, led by Goethals, Emily Sisson from Chesterfield, Mo., and Sara Kroll from Westland, Mich. After the two-mile mark, Goethals and Sisson separated from the pack with Goethals eventually securing the title.
Sisson, 18, is a four-time National qualifier. She finished in 17:42.
Also qualifying were Katie Flood of Des Moines, Iowa (17:48); Ashlie Decker of Des Moines, Iowa (17:51); Kesley Lakowske of Boulder, Colo. (17:52); Sara Kroll of Westland, Mich. (18:15); Avery Clifton of Topeka, Kansas (18:16); Marya Haegler of Cascade (18:17) and Shannon Osika of Waterford, Mich. (18:37).
Aaron Edge, 15, of Genoa City was 143rd in 21:18.
Early lead holdsIn the boys’ seeded race, Verzbicas took an early lead, followed by a small pack of runners, including Walter Schafer from Centennial, Colo., and Tyler Byrne from Georgetown, Ind. Verzbicas won by seven seconds over runnerup Schafer with Byrne taking third (15:46).
Andrew Diehn of Columbus, Ind., won the 214-runner Boys Freshman-Sophomore race in 16:08. Pleasant Prairie’s Zach Hansen was 70th in 18:31; Kenosha’s Daniel Ball was 85th in 18:43; Pleasant Prairie’s Kyle Nottingham was 90th in 18:46; Pleasant Prairie’s Matt Short was 184th in 22:37;
Bobby Brockmueller of Brandon, S.D., topped the field of 201 in winning the Boys Junior/Senior Race in 16:41.
Lindsey Burdette of Horton, Mich., won the 62-runner Girls Freshman/Sophomore Race in 20:10.
Mueller winsScott Mueller, a 24-year old from Milwaukee, took the 203-runner Open race in 16:19. Pleasant Prairie’s Dan Meinhardt, 21, was 85th in 21:14; Nigel Ball, 48, was 103rd in 22:06; Kathryn Del Fava, 11, was 171st in 25:45; Pleasant Prairie’s Sheri Villani, 41, was 184th in 27:04 and Mandy Scopp, 12, was 191st in 28:33.
The races featured runners from Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota and Wisconsin.
