Tremper’s Andrew Griffey just missed medaling for the third straight year in the 100-yard backstroke in leading a large local contingent at the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Division-1 State Swimming and Diving Championships on Saturday at the University of Wisconsin Natatorium.

Griffey scored all 15 of the Trojans’ points. He finished seventh in the 100 backstroke with a time of 52.68 seconds and 14th in the 50 freestyle in 21.96.

Tremper and Bradford each qualified seven individuals in five events. Bradford, led by sophomore diver Lee Anderson, also finished with 15 points to tie the Trojans for 28th place in the field of 33.

Anderson capped off a successful season with a 10th-place finish with 243.95 points.

“To finish that high at State is awesome,” Bradford coach Franz Feldmeier said. “Diving is so competitive. We’re pretty happy for him to be able to do this as a sophomore.”

Griffey, seeded third in the 100 backstroke and 13th in the 50 freestyle, fell short of medaling with a top-six finish in each event. The four-time State qualifier finished fifth in the 100 backstroke as a sophomore, sixth in the event as a junior and seventh this year despite dropping his time each season.

“It’s hard to be disappointed when you do that,” Tremper coach Mike McKay said. “Andrew understands that. He’s a very mature kid. I know he would’ve liked to place higher, but he’s happy with his times.”

The senior also joined Aubrey Langley, Alex Lopez and Riley Seebeck for a 17th-place finish in the 200 medley relay in 1:43.12. The Trojans’ 400 freestyle relay of Griffey, Drake Koster, Ron Schaefer and Seebeck was disqualified on a false start.

“I thought it was questionable,” McKay said of the disqualification. “(The officials) said it had something to do with the last relay exchange.”

Bradford’s John DeVroy scored points in finishing 13th in each the 100 backstroke (54.30) and 200 individual medley (2:00.57). Joe DeVroy took 18th in the 100 backstroke (56.20).

Tremper’s Ryan Schmidt improved two spots from his seed time with a 19th-place showing in the 500 freestyle (4:59.92).

Bradford’s 200 medley relay of Joe DeVroy, Andrew Heuser, John DeVroy and Patrick Stephens placed 19th in 1:43.56. The Red Devils’ 200 freestyle relay of Stephens, Johnas Lohse, John Stuligross and John DeVroy took 22nd in 1:32.62.

“We had a nice meet,” Feldmeier said. “I can’t complain. It was about as we expected. We were just trying to better our times. You hate to see the season end. All of them were really coming around.”
