Hogen’s the hero
SOMERS — If you ever run into the UW-Parkside women’s basketball team down a dark alley, you would be well-advised not to mess with Brittany Hogen.
The 6-foot bruiser recorded the first 20-20 game in program history with a career-high 28 points and 21 rebounds as the Rangers defeated NAIA Robert Morris (Ill.), 85-70, in a non-conference game Saturday at the DeSimone Gymnasium.

Hogen tallied a double-double in the first half with 11 points and 12 rebounds and delivered another punishing performance in the second half.
“She was definitely a beast down there,” said Parkside forward Brittany Beyer, who also finished with a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds. “Pretty much just give her the ball in the lane and it’s going to be a layup.”
Hogen surpassed her previous high of 24 points scored at Bellarmine last Feb. 5 and destroyed her previous best of 13 rebounds at Missouri S&T on March 6.
The junior clearly has taken her game to another level this year.
“I just have a lot more confidence,” said Hogen, who once grabbed 26 rebounds in a game during her senior year at John Hersey (Ill.) High School “I have another year under my belt and I feel more comfortable out there. I guess last year I was still a little shy.”
Hogen came two boards away from tying the school’s all-time record of 23 rebounds set by Laurie Pope against St. Francis on Dec. 19, 1980.
In 34 minutes, Hogen finished with 17 defensive rebounds and four offensive boards. She shot 8-of-16 from the field, 12-of-15 from the free-throw line and also dished out three assists.
“She did what she had to do,” Parkside coach Jenny Kenesie said. “She stayed on the floor and played a lot of minutes against some athletic kids. She did a nice job.”
Sporting a green mouthpiece to match her jersey trim and swinging a pair of devastating elbows, Hogen constantly battled for position down low. She attempted all 16 of her shots within five feet of the basket.
“We did a good job of making the extra pass so we got layups instead of having to settle for jump shots and three-pointers,” Hogen said. “I thought everyone did a goob job of finding the open player. I wouldn’t have been able to get all those layups if they weren’t getting the ball inside.”
Hogen has started all eight games this season and is averaging 16.1 points and 9.6 rebounds.
